Nepal is a country of multi- religion, language and culture. There are 61
different ethnic groups residing throughout the country and they will be
mentioned respectively in our forth coming issues.
Ethnic groups are those which have their own social& cultural identity and
they have their different traditional languages, rituals, religions and
cultures. These groups are prevalent in specific geographical areas and
have written unwritten history.
We present the introduction of Tamang
caste in this issue.

Tamangs are mainly found in
Rasuwa, Sindhupalchok, Kabhrepalanchok, Makawanpur, Nuwakot, Dhading,
Ramechhap, Dolakha and Sindhuli districts of Nepal. According
to Nepal’s population survey of 2048 B.S, the total population of Tamang
is 5.5 percent. They have their own rich language, traditions and rituals.
The historical ‘abhilekh’ of third century too show Tamangs to be powerful
so, we can know that their ‘sabhyata’ was developed from ancient times.
They follow Buddhist religion, their script is Tibetan script and have
many holy books. Including King Priest, History Teller they have many
intellectual division of labour. Loshar, Maghe Sangranti, Baisakh
Purnima, Shrawan Purnima etc are the important festivals of Tamangs.
They eat Phapar’s bread and have many casts. |
